sooo... stone's vertical epic is actually a series of ales that started back in 2001. This is the eighth in the series, and it's a fairly complex, very dark ale. they say it's supposed carry the complimentary flavors of chocolate and orange (via tangerine peel). you can taste those things, in addition to some malty kick and a spiciness I'm not good enough to decode by taste. the shit's damn-near black and super heady on the pour. it's a lot more interesting than the young's double chocolate stout. stone says they're brewing this series to be aged, with 2012 being the target year to drink em all (who the hell would bother?). This beer, with an 8.9ABV, would age three years; the 2001 would age 11, and so on. I think probably this beer would benefit from a few years in storage, but it's pretty good now. 7.5/8 out of 10.

I'll take a Dogfish Head, Stone, New Belgium, Rogue, or a million other things before a Red Hook or a Brooklyn. fucking CHOSS.

Redhook from the West >>>> Redhook from the East, different water?

But it still don't beat Stone, Rogue, etc. Beats fat tire hands down but not other offerings from New Belgium (1554 damn good).

However, here you can get Western Redhook 12-pack for $12, so my blue-collar defaults are Longhammer and ESB (or Negra or Anchor Porter, depending upon what's on sale). Hip New Belgium stuff is popular and not worth the extra couple bucks a sixer, and Stone, Rogue only come in bombers, so I save that for weekends. Can't get Dogfish Head here, that would be worth the $ 4sure.

Used to be able to get Lone Star 4-16s for $1.25... And Mickey's 40oz bile was $1.39. The "good" old days.

And Sam Adams is overrated bogwater.

Echinacea tea with honey and a dollop of bourbon; perfect nighttime allergy toddy.

New Belgium Hoptober. Claims 40 IBUs. I could barely taste 'em, or anything else really. Totally not all that, but I could kill a sixer in an episode of Entourage.

company: ska brewing company, based in durango, colorado
beer: nefarious ten pin imperial porter
color: opaque, with a hint of burnt-caramel brown
nose: black molasses, malt, other stuff
taste: slightly sweet, with malty, yeasty goodness; a little coffee, maybe even some "dark fruits," and a bitter drag in the back o' the throat
carbonation: medium
head: maybe an inch, with some lacing hanging tough
abv: 8%
ibu: dunno
gripes: using "imperial" tag on anything that's not a stout. (actually, i don't care, and neither shud u.)
likes: dark fucking beer and labels with skullz
rating (1-10): 8 (but I'm partial to kickass stouts and porters)
