Rawr! This little guy was a pain to photography. Generally, I haven't had much trouble photographing damselflies, but this one was exceptionally skittish. Desire to purchase the 180mm macro is strong.

I also need a better telephoto. This bottom line 75-300mm is unacceptable. New telephoto or new macro? L glass is pricey.

A ring flash can do a lot for macro work. And you can always try catching the insects and then throw them in the freezer for a few minutes so that they move really slow when you put them back on the leaf or twig. Or you could just kill it and then treat it like a studio subject. Then you can use focus stacking to bring the entire insect into focus.

Is that a person/tent on the summit of the other side?

Two hikers. I have very few high line photos without at least a couple tourons in the background.

Ring flash is certainly on my list of "awesome things to have someday" but I haven't found it entirely necessary. My speedlight does an acceptable job. If I had the 1x-5x Canon macro, however, the ring flash would be mandatory. As for freezering or killing the little buggers, not what I'm interesting in doing. My impact stops at just following them around as they go about their business.

When I was a kid I would take thread and freeze a wasp and tie the thread around the wasp's abdomen zone and then thaw that sucker out. Wasp on a string is an awesome thing to chase your sister around with.

Good times.

Nice! Haven't found an eagle carcass before. We found just the wings of a gull today on the river. Seems the eagles like some bird in between all the salmon.
