Rust happens, I know this. But is it a higher ratio than other cars? Or, perhaps, they're rotted out because the internals were reliable enough to get to such an age?

Edit: Slim, thanks for the comparisons to other japcrap.

I have to say .. I tried to craft a well thought and witty response to this well thought out response. But i am without wit. Fail.

I'm still not sure what the "rusty subaru" even is... but honestly, it doesn't sound like a dude is involved at all.

Unless he was from Vermont.

Blown headgaskets are usually the result of poor maintenance. Low coolant + low oil = runs hot = blown headgasket.

I've logged 85k hard miles on mine, and know several other Subaru owners with similar mileage and we have all had no headgasket issues. Just change your oil regularly and keep the coolant topped off and you'll not have these issues.

It was definitely not a maintenance issue in my 98 outback. I am meticulous with that shit. It was a known problem starting with the 97 engine. Maybe it's been resolved now, but I wouldn't get a used Subi that is older than about a 2005

Headgaskets are for pussies. I've been driving without one for like 40,000 miles.

I will say that my outback was better off road than my 2010 rav4. Kind of surprising since the rav is "real" 4wd, and a v6

should've gone 4runner, though I wouldn't buy anything from 2009 on given all the recall shenanigans. Hell, anything past 2005 that got the design equivalent of a collagen OD gets a veto on principle alone in my book. I though you had a Highlander?

nope, rav4. Gas mileage was a huge determining factor in my decision. Getting close to 30 mpg when I drive conservatively (which takes quite an effort for me). Other than the slight off road problem, an issue only on steep downhills, and the fact it's fugly, I love it. Very peppy, roomy, luxe (got the limited, loaded), and it sleeps 2 no problem. And unlike my Subi which had numerous problems right out of the gate, I have not had one single problem with this after 15 months of owning it. It could use a better sound system, tho

So I bought the 328is and it kicks ass. It still has the original clutch after 167k miles and am looking to replace it. I don't like the stock dual-pressure flywheel because it mutes and dampens shifting. Anyone know if an m3 kit or jb racing aluminum flywheel combined with stock Sachs kit would work with my ride? I may be looking into dropping a s50 into it with race suspension. SLEEPER.

Might as well sell it and buy an M3 at that point!

true that. i guess it's got plenty of power to scare myself as is, though it could use a bit more low end torque. the quality of these cars is amazing. i've been hearing stories of these engines lasting beyond 500k miles from 'drivers'.

definitely not practical, but worth the fun. I even enjoy working on it as everything is very accessible and laid out well (with some exceptions). hobby car yo.
