Get a fucking clue, retard. This is a bouldering forum, not a photographic advice forum. You are way too pushy and don't seem to realize that no one asked you to give such gruesomely boring critiques of peoples photos. I've looked at your site and you've a handful of nice shots, but I think you've let your head inflate to the point that you've started to believe that your advice is not only good, but actually warranted. This has nothing to with mastering shots - that shot was taken with an 85mm which is designed to have a specific distance range in which it performs optimally. Its dark in the forest, you know? 1.4's aren't cheap and I only have two. Why would I not use it all the time? Did it ever occur to you that the boulder in question (and plenty more in the jumbled over-grown talus that is Squamish) doesn't exactly have the grand landscape possibilites that you clearly have a hard on for? And these are the shots that I've shared here - a fraction of what I've done. I don't need to please your over-eager internet ego - I don't care what you think I should do more of. You're a douche and apparently the only one here who doesn't realize that.

Older model 300mm sell in the $300-500 range on ebay, depending on which brand you shoot with. From what I've read about the 100-500 from sigma it sounds like its great up to about 300 and then it starts to suffer if pushed passed that under anything less than perfect conditions. Slap a teleconverter on the 300mm and it will look as good or better into the same range, if you feel like you actually need the extra reach. And if you are shooting on cropped sensor and buy a 300mm designed for film/full frame then you are left with a 450mm at either 2.8 or 4.

And nice shot, Ike. Captured the sense of difficulty nicely.

look, man. if my unsollicited critiques were so gruesomely boring, then really you'd have to be pretty stupid to obviously take them so seriously.

but let's stop with the name calling.

let's take my photos for example. i don't really think they're really all that great. i suck at all kinds of things. i can't think of even one of my photos that is beyond reproach. if i were to sit down with you and look at my inernet photos, or the few that i've been lucky enough to get pulished here and there, i wouldn't be able to find one photo that i wouldn't be able to point out the ways that i fell short in capturing the best shot possible. i have said it recently to a few people that i find it easier to appreciate the photos of other people than i do my own. that's just the way it is. looking at my photos is like looking at myself - i've seen that face in the mirror too many times to not notice the things that others may not notice.

however, don't go saying - oh my photography is limited by the physical landscape of the place that i shoot - that's an excuse. i've seen photos of squamish by other photographers and their photos aren't anything like yours. bouldering photography is really hard. there are serious challenges to doing it competently. hardly anybody does a great job of it all the time. however, i can tell you i really like the photos that people like Andy Burr, Andy Mann, and Matt Stark are currently taking. again, i really like your photos most of the time, too.

also, don't complain about the limitations of your equipment - i'm certain that your equipment is better than mine. that aspect of your photos is totally evident in your pix. i wish i had a D700, or something of that caliber. i wish i had better lenses, but i have what i have and i do my best.

and don't go saying that because this is a bouldering forum that i'm out of order to criticize your posted photos. this is b.com and we talk about all kinds of things here that are peripherial to bouldering. if you can't handle the heat, don't post your pix.
