anyone have any experience building volumes- with plywood and framing? i'd like something like this:

in terms of the framing, what would the connection be at the forward apex?

chinese birch plywood super cheap right now.

YES I HAVE BUILT VOLUMES USE SCREWS AND WOOD = GOOD

Seriously, you're thinking too much about it. Just cut shit and screw it down.

I've also found volumes to be exceedingly annoying in most applications. How large is the wall you plan on putting this on?

glue- good tip.

the wall is framed up and is 12' X 12' (plus a rock kickplate), with a little over 1' overhang over that height. i have a 1/2 sheet of plywood left, so thought i'd get that involved somehow. it would make it interesting for setting problems. maybe it's on sometimes, off sometimes.

Seriously, build something more useful. Like a catbox.

the cat doesn't need a box. george lives beyond the consciousness of usefulness. it's all thumb-less, moving forward with the nose desire.

last session on the wall was tuesday, when the winter warmed up to -10degrees, clear sky, little threat of avalanche; the plastic was cold to the touch, and slippery. pinches were much harder than remembered. slopers gave little friction. some problems remained uncompleted; such is how it is and continues to be, with things still to complete again.

...minus burning candles. this was not a birthday special.

are there any credible design options for an adjustable pitch board? what about wire with a bracing cable?

raining again- so we climb on plastic.

ok so the volume is built and up on the wall. i like it more or less actually, now that it's there. the thing i like is that you can force movements with it- literally, the climber has to move around the feature and so come at the wall from different angles. that can introduce interesting movement in a very little bit of space, relatively speaking.
Image
what i would change about this one is to make it bigger. like person sized big, just roughly by volume. what i put together was a very large hold (it worked well with little crimps- gnats to be precise). what would be next is a person sized coffin of a feature. big enough to move both the hands and feet onto different angles. with a smaller feature ( like 2'X2' here) you just move your hands around it, then maybe hup up onto it with your feet. i think we need to change the whole shape of the movement, not just what's being grabbed onto. just something to think about.

oh- also, to get some grip out of the corner: worn floor sanding paper+epoxy --> ++

epoxy glued up joints, set in place with screws work pretty well for assembly. the cuts required some thinking.
