cartilage repair/healing

I know I'm not the only one around here with joint/cartilage/tendon issues. Most of you are older and some are frailer, so what have you figured out for getting back in the game? Supplements, diet, exercise, hookers, drugs? Been doing rehab for my hip for a few months and its going smoothly enough, but anything to make things go quicker or come back stronger would be a plus.

Asking around I've gotten a bunch of suggestions that seem to range from crackpot to potentially useful. All of the doctors I've spoken to so far just recommend what I've been doing and giving it more time.

What are your tricks?

Was this from some sorta acute incident, or from a culmination of awkward leg motions causing chronic hip problems? My left hip is a little jacked from skiing, but it only pops out partway then re-inserts itself with shooting pain. It usually only happens when my legs are acting like Bilsteins maching ass over bad snow when my quads are on fire.

My knee detonation and resulting surgery took 2 years to feel strong enough to climb on. I still don't have the same flexion that I do with the other knee, but I know riding my bike in the hills of SF has helped it a lot. Strengthening the muscles around the area, increasing ROM, and reducing scar tissue seem to be the ticket for most things... this is after you've allowed the joint to heal properly. As for supplements, I used to take MSM, chondroitin and glucosamine, and noticed some level of lubrication, but no real acceleration of healing.

I had a friend with a hip problem associated with a backstep where several doctors couldn't diagnose the problem without "let's SEE wtf is wrong" surgery. Being a doctor herself, dismissed the others as douchebags and has since limited herself to lower impact activities for the most part.

Word to not boozin. Easy party.

Stone: Hip surgery for a torn labrum back in October. Tore it last June.

Ike: Do you actually notice anything from MSM? I read something a while ago about it putting people at risk for diabetes even more at risk so I've been avoiding it in light of family history. Might be worth looking into again.

Yoga + Naproxen is currently doing the trick for keeping things in check. Caffeine seems to reduce flairups, which I don't get. Just need to avoid highstepping and picking up heavy shit.

Nutriex works better than all that shit.

Sure, it's pricey... but you have a job so you can afford the stuff that really works, right?

not a coincidence at all. Dehydration can seriously affect tendon strength and the healing process in general. Drink lots of water.

I have found MSM helpful with finger injuries. I have taken it for a few extended periods and noticed significant improvement in a relatively short period of time. Didn't know about the diabetes thing though. I suppose that's worth taking into consideration when weighing your options. Maybe I just need to drink less?

what's funny in this thread is, that being actually in the medical profession, the common medical term for MSM is...

Men who have Sex with Men

re-read the thread with that in mind.

If I am to offer at least one straight-up, no bullshit, no wink wink, nudge nudge post here, it is this:

my knees are worn the fuck out. period.

taken regularly, osteo-biflex keeps me (50) in the park 7 days a week which includes hiking and exploring on rest days. most recently 6 days on climbing, 2 hour sessions mostly. (unfortunately the supplements dont help sore tendons or stupidity).

without it (taken regularly), one day in the park will result in knee's the size of cantaloupes and unbearable discomfort walking.

in addition to MSM and all the other well known crap, it contains Astaxanthin which is the algae that makes shellfish turn pink and that is THE SHIT that works. I also take astaxanthin separately as a supplement.

double-packs of osteo-biflex at walmart for $20. a small price to pay to try a product that works.
I literally felt results within a day or two when I first started with this a year and a half ago.
