The worst sin that can be committed against the artist is to take him at his word, to see in his work a fulfillment instead of an horizon.

It's a Henry Miller day.

A man writes to throw off the poison which he has accumulated because of his false way of life. He is trying to recapture his innocence, yet all he succeeds in doing (by writing) is to inoculate the world with a virus of his disillusionment. No man would set a word down on paper if he had the courage to live out what he believed in.

Translation: I don't just write about Miller time, I participate.

Lay off the early Romantics; they all ended up addicts or old bitters.

Except Blake. Blake was awesome. Like "re-enacting what he thought the Garden of Eden was like in the backyard with his wife" awesome.

Stop calling him climatologist. In order for him to hold that title he would have to have a job in the field.

Bird Counter, Sender of Lowballs.

Thats it.

At least birdology is a real science.

Christian Science is a religion, not a science.

Although as a climatologist, I am sure it's tough to differentiate between science and not science.

Quit drinking for one. Information retention is inversely proportional to the number of beers consumed during the learning process. Can you remember ANYTHING from your depressing confinement to the Louisiana Delta or school in general?

Self loathing is exhausting Porchie don't you think you deserve a vacation?

Not quite as much of a fool as someone with a degree in climatology and so many questions about the subject.

When an "educated" climatologist would ask me (or any layperson) for ways to improve what they do, you know they don't know crap.

niceporch wrote:malachi, i usually respect your opinion, but this time i'm going to have to call bullshit.

if atmospheric predictive modeling wasn't worthwhile, it wouldn't be used by the vast majority of the public, major utility companies, the aviation sector, the whole U.S. armed forces, large construction companies, the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers, any state department of transportation, etc., etc.

people always say how the forecast is wrong. but people still check the forecast. why? because it has value. and, most of the time, it is accurate. the prediction of tropical storms, tornadoes, blizzards, etc is paramount to the safety of the public. you'd be an idiot to disagree.

Talking about the weather has never been "worthwhile" and has always been a source of human small talk. The entire "predictive modelling" practise of meteorology is bunk as shit, as malachi mentions. However, it is what pays the fucking bills. People don't care about where the hurricane hit and why, they care about where it's gonna hit... even if with all your predicitve models, you only have a rough estimate that invariably changes 4 - 24 times before the actual storm hits the land. People see value in the fodder for small talk, not because it is accurate... but because they simply have the human desire to feel like they know what tomorrow will bring, especially if their choice is agree or disagree with some douchebag.

Paramount to the safety of the public... laughable. The "weatherman" is the modern snakeoil salesman.

really? I thought you were in town the other week for the second biggest snow on record that was very accurately predicted (as was the first real snowdump we got in December, if memory serves). I like to make fun of porchie as much as the next girl on this thread, but uh, that shit was spot on and you know it.

Like the snow we've been supposed to have since Tuesday?

Again... if you're right 20% of the time, or only when the "predictive model" goes to the HOLY CRAP level, you're not actually doing that good. Meterology is like Sex Panther... 60% of the time, it works every time.

When you find the educated person who has no questions about their topic of interest you should be very, very wary. When they are also insular little fucktards you should punch them in the face.
