Actually we do something like that as a means of river travel, with the paddle replaced with a pole, and more of a whitewater wooden boat instead of apple skin (though that looks like a fast one). It is amazing what kind of whitewater you can make your way up, or snub downstream, even pushing a heavy canoe with packs. Kind of depends on the river though- very good on easten salmon rivers with gravelly bottoms, or up north here on shallow rocky rivers. Trim downstream heavy. There's a nice book on that- beyond the paddle, on different way s to move a canoe over the water.
Almost past the bugs and into canoe tripping season. The water levels are so low right now.
