Serious answer: Like everything else, it depends, though, personally, unless that person enjoys not seeing me every weekend/summer, it's probably not going to work out.

It may seem like a problem early in the relationship but if it gets serious it's good to have your own thing to do. I mean what happens when she gets much better than you and you do nothing but spot/belay all the times?

Plus you get to oogle all the young fit climber chix and don't have to do it in front of the wife (even if she's cool with that, there is some guilt nonetheless).

The biggest problem I think is if you wanna go somewhere and there is nothing really to do but climb there. Like I imagine Bishop or El Paso would get boring pretty quick without the rocks?

My wife is a trooper for going up to Emerald Lake with us and sitting in the wind/snow while we stroked our egos on jugs. She says she had fun... and I would've bailed if she expressed displeasure. But that area is so beautiful that perhaps most people feel like it's a gift just to be there. At least I did.

So in summary I don't feel that it's a negative thing to date non-climbers.

Seriously. My girl trudged up to the top of West Mountain with us to suffer the howling wind and watch us fall off of Huecooler and the German Peter Project. A real trooper. She has fun playing with the camera at least. And yes, as much as I try to get her more interested in climbing, it is kind of nice to have our own things. Pretty much agree with everything you said elblat.

Dude, that is no lie. I was there that day, that day sucked, and your girl was a hell of a lot cooler about it than I was, and I do climb. (Also she looked a hell of a lot better in tights than I ever have. Your girls wins in pretty much every category.)

I wouldn't be able to date a non-climber guy. I couldn't handle being able to do something athletic that my man couldn't do. I'd start expecting him to do all the cooking and cleaning, and ignoring his attempts at conversation unless I wanted sex.

I used to date a non-climber. And then she experienced rocks whilst in the Flagstafflands. They were slabby, but rocks nontheless. She was psyched and wanted to go climbing all of the days. Now I'm dating a sorta-climber.

Can only be considered a climber if she would still continue to climb even if you broke up.

I've given up on the climbing girlfriend in favor of a girlfriend who is beautiful and intelligent. More intelligent than myself. She is not in the least bit athletic. But she will go to the crag with me and enjoy being outside. She just brings something to read. Love.
