I think it's bullshit to ask people for money after a climbing accident...there's a reason insurance won't pay when you're negligent so why should anyone else pick up the bill

It's called "community." It is the way humans used to treat each other so that we didn't rely on Government to support everyone everywhere.

"Take care of him and I will repay thee" - a shortened version of "And on the morrow when he departed, he took out two pence, and gave them to the host, and said unto him, Take care of him; and whatsoever thou spendest more, when I come again, I will repay thee"

Society as it should be. Caring for each other in times of need. Instead we now have a welfare state.

If you chose not to help someone with whom you may have a shared passion or interest, fine. But don't be a dick about it. Ths isn't raining on someone's parade because they couldn't send their project that you consider weakmo - this is somene that died and left behind friends and family.

mistakes are made and accidents happen.. soliciting donations to pay for the aftermath always rubs me the wrong way

This is a tough call for me, for I think that once one has children, priorities and actions should change significantly--that is, one should always be working to make sure that, in the event of an accident, one's progeny will be okay. If a parent hasn't taken such steps, it's hard for me not to feel like that parent is being irresponsible. Basically, once one has dependents, then one's actions have a magnified effect on the world, and activities should be adjusted accordingly. But that line is different for everyone.

I am not a parent, though, so I feel doubly conflicted/out of my league when I speculate about such things.

At the same time, I admire the fact that the climbing community often attempts to take care of its own.

the climbing community inherently attracts selfish fucks.
the internet inherently attracts loud-mouth dumb-asses.

People are doing this for his son and its not like you aren't getting something for it. Just because his dad was a selfish ass doesn't mean he should suffer both emotionally and financially.

it's also as easy as, if you don't want to give, don't give.

Which brings us back to my response. I like to give.

But I don't give money, I give people shit.

And then liberals like WB eat it up and wonder why their breath stinks.
